apt-get upgrade is offering linux-firmware on Ubuntu - should I ignore this?

January 5, 2015 2.1k views

I'm quite happy to update and upgrade the kernel etc, and I regularly do. However, I've just had:

The following packages will be upgraded:
1 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded.
Need to get 21.4 MB of archives.
After this operation, 1,024 B of additional disk space will be used.

Never noticed this one before. Now, given that this is a VPS, is updating firmware going to be A Bad Idea? Or am I safe to just go ahead with it?

In an ideal world, I'd just take a snapshot, try it, and rollback if bad. But with 20GB snapshots taking in excess of half an hour and no way of doing it without taking the server offline, I didn't want to risk it!
