How to determine the required size of a droplet for load balancing?

I'm switching over from Linode which had proprietary node balancers. They charged a flat $20/month for node balancing, regardless of traffic. (That would equate to their 2GB Linode.)

Assuming the load balancer is configured to communicate over the Private Network, how much traffic can a 1GB or 2GB droplet (running nginx for load balancing) really handle? Is there any good way to determine this?

  • I'm sure it could handle a pretty fair amount of traffic. Do you have an estimate of the traffic that you are getting to your site every month? I would just start with a 512MB droplet with HAProxy or Nginx and if need be, you can always scale up.
