How to enable gzip compression on DO's standard WordPress install?

I am running Digital Ocean's standard WordPress image which is Ubuntu 14.04.

I tried to follow this tutorial here:

It isn't working. Some confusion is that I don't have any files in sites available so I created one for my site with the same name as my server and added the recommendations. There is nothing in the log file so I guess it is not working.

Do I have to put this somewhere else or is this tutorial inappropriate for what I'm running? Thanks.

Enable compression
Compressing resources with gzip or deflate can reduce the number of bytes sent over the network.
Enable compression for the following resources to reduce their transfer size by 114.8KiB (70% reduction).

    Compressing .../fonts/titillium-regular-webfont.svg could save 38.7KiB (71% reduction).
    Compressing …/fonts/titillium-light-webfont.svg could save 38.6KiB (71% reduction).
    Compressing …/fonts/titillium-semibold-webfont.svg could save 37.4KiB (70% reduction).
