Stuck on Resolving Domain Name

DNS VPN Ubuntu

Hey guys - I'm a brand new, proud droplet owner, but I need some help. I'm aiming to set up Open Vpn on my Ubuntu droplet, and I've been following this handy guide here: https://www.digitalocean.com/community/tutorials/how-to-set-up-an-openvpn-server-on-ubuntu-14-04.

I posted the auto-install Open VPN script in the User data while making my droplet, so I skipped to step two of the process, which I believe is correct. But After following everything through, I'm attempting to connect via TunnelBlick (OSX) and it can't get past "Resolving Domain Name." I even tried editing the server.conf to use Googles DNS ( because I thought it might be an issue with Open DNS.

I'm brand new to terminal, so I'm kind of at a loss on how to do much troubleshooting. Any thoughts?

  • I just ran into this issue too trying to setup an openvpn server on Linode running Debian 8. My MacBook Pro client running OS X 10.10.5 connects to my vpn just fine but my Hackintosh client running OS X 10.11.2 is stuck on resolving the domain name. Through my initial research it seemed it may have been an open dns issue but using google's dns didn't help me either.

Any chance there is a bug in more recent versions of OS X? I can't really think of why else my MacBook Pro is just fine but my Hackintosh isn't.

Insight from anyone willing to offer some would be greatly appreciated!
