Websites on Droplet Running a Bit Slow

WordPress LAMP Stack Caching

I've been using DigitalOcean for a little over a month now. I have three websites installed using LAMP Ubuntu 14.04 with 1GB Mem. I use virtual hosts with apache to run the three websites. I have wordpress on two of them, and just a regular HTML on the other.

My websites take a bit too long to load. My HTML site doesn't have much content, so I'm not sure why it would load so slow. One of my wordpress sites have a decent amount of media on it, and it loads really slowly. And its extremely laggy. Sometimes when I scroll through the pages it lags and pauses for a few moments.

I've installed and configured varnish. It seems to have made a slight improvement, but not nearly enough. Does anyone have any suggestions? Any tips on how to speed things up? Looking at my processes, loading the bigger wordpress site takes about 4-5% of memory usage for a few seconds and even less CPU %, so I don't think its a resource issue.
