What is the best solution for setting up a mailing list?

I used to use Google Apps for Business to create my emails and mailing lists, but they have since started charging per user (which can become pricy rather fast!). I have read the the cautions against running one's own mail server (https://www.digitalocean.com/community/tutorials/why-you-may-not-want-to-run-your-own-mail-server), but am still interested in mainly setting up a mailing list using something like Mailman GNU or GroupServer. There is a lack of resources/tutorials on how to use these services. Mainly I want to use them for distribution lists/community email lists (i.e. community@domain.com for all the members belonging to a particular community to have a consolidating up-to-date mailing list, that they can subscribe or unsubscribe to). I currently have a couple droplets running Vesta Control Panel with WordPress installs, but I could spin up an additional droplet if necessary to get a simple mailing list going.

Anyone who has had experience setting up a mailing list on their own droplet or knows of some other very economic ways of doing it, I'd greatly appreciate your input!
