What's the point of CoreOS on DO?

December 21, 2014 1.4k views

So I've built a cluster, played with moving a "web app" around and seeing it work but it leaves me with two questions.

  1. There doesn't seem to be any way to sanely do shared storage (without either using AWS S3 (in which case I'd just deploy on EC2) or hacking gluster to work). I can't really think of many applications that don't require some persistent storage. Forcing my DB or storage on to a single host means it'll go down every time CoreOS decides to upgrade that node. Galera is a maybe option for the DB but file storage is still an issue.

  2. Load balancing from outside. 1 IP per droplet and no VRRP or anycast so basically still a single point of failure.

Am I missing something about the hype or is it really only intended for a learning environment?
