Payment Methods

We accept the following payment methods:

  • Credit cards. We accept Visa, MasterCard, American Express, and Discover. When you add more than one credit card to your account, you can designate which one should be billed by default.

    If you are using credit or debit cards from India, your card needs to be enabled for international transactions. Cards issued by Citibank, HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank, Standard Chartered Bank, IndusInd Bank, RBL Bank, Axis Bank and Kotak Mahindra Bank have lower decline rates than other banks. If your card is declined on the first attempt, contact the bank to find the cause or learn how to allow the payments.

  • PayPal. We accept pre-payment via PayPal. Once you submit the PayPal payment, it will be processed and added to our system, and you should see an updated balance within a few hours.

    If your PayPal pre-payment does not cover the charges on your account and you have a credit card on file, our billing system will attempt to charge your credit card on the first of the month. If you have no other method of payment on file, your account is immediately considered past due. To avoid this, add more funds or add another payment method to bring your account current.

  • Debit cards. If you have trouble using a debit card, we recommend using the card to send a payment via PayPal.

DigitalOcean’s terms of service prohibit credit cards issued in or with billing addresses from OFAC-sanctioned countries. For more information, including a list of countries, see the Lawful Use of the Network section in our terms of service.

Because up to 80% of abusive sign-ups use virtual, electron, or prepaid cards, we currently do not accept these payment methods. If you’re having trouble adding a credit/debit card or making a payment through Paypal, you can open a support ticket for additional help.

Promo Codes

As a new customer, you can apply a promo code to your account on the Billing page in the Payment methods section. Enter the case-sensitive code in the promo code field. Once entered correctly, the credits are automatically applied to your account.

The following limits apply to promo codes:

  • One promo code per account. If you’ve redeemed a promo code in the past, you cannot add another. To see your promo code history, visit your billing page.

  • Non-transferable. Credits from promo codes cannot be transferred to another account, including a team account.

  • Use within 1 year. Unlike paid credits from PayPal credits, which do not expire, credits from promo codes must be used within one year of the date they were applied.

In order to create your first Droplet, you must have a valid credit card on your account or make a PayPal deposit even when using a promo code.

Past Due Accounts

An account is considered past due if:

  • A credit or debit card is declined on the 1st of the month.
  • A PayPal account runs out of funds and there is no other payment method on file.

If there is another payment method on file the account is still considered past due, and the card will be charged for the unpaid balance on the 1st of the month.

Once an account is past due:

  • We will send an email to the account owner.
  • You can log in to your account to add new payment methods.
  • You will not be able to create new resources.
  • Your existing resources will continue to run.
  • You have 21 days to pay the balance before your account is suspended.

Once the account is suspended:

  • We will send an email titled “Server Termination Urgent” to the account owner.
  • Your resources will be powered down.
  • Logins will be disabled and you will be redirected to the payment page.
  • You will have 14 days to pay the balance.

If you do not pay the balance within 14 days after suspension, all the resources in the account will be permanently deleted and cannot be recovered.
