As of 1 September 2016, the Government of New Zealand introduced New Zealand’s Goods and Services Tax Act rules under section 8(2) to (4) which applies to all non-resident businesses that supply remote services from outside New Zealand to New Zealand customers. Services provided by DigitalOcean are subject to GST and are applicable to persons not registered for the GST at the standard rate of 15%.
Starting on 1 May 2019, DigitalOcean will begin charging this GST for users with a tax location in New Zealand. Users can expect to see these charges on 1 June 2019 invoices for the May billing period.
The change doesn’t affect business-to-business sales. In these cases, the reverse charge mechanism will be in effect.
Tax location is determined by the origin of the last credit card added. This is the location returned by DigitalOcean’s credit card processor for the given card (not the user entered location).
For PayPal users, tax location is determined by the location returned by PayPal for the last payment.
You can change your tax location by adding a payment card with a different location origin or by making a PayPal payment with an updated location.
