DNS Quickstart

To follow along, you will need a DigitalOcean account. If you don’t already have one, you can register on the sign up page.

Add a Domain

  1. From the Control Panel, click Create in the top right, then select Domains/DNS.
  2. In the Add a domain section, enter the domain. This is typically the base domain only, e.g. example.com and not www.example.com. Subdomains are added by creating specific DNS records after the base domain has been added.
  3. Click Add Domain. This will take you directly to the Create new record page and add NS records for the domain on DigitalOcean servers.

Create and Delete Records

To create a record:

  1. Select the record type: A, AAAA, CNAME, MX, TXT, NS, SRV, or CAA just below the heading.
  2. Fill in the fields required by the specific record type. See How to Manage DNS Records for detailed instructions on each one.
  3. Click Create Record.

To delete a record:

  1. Open the record’s More menu and select Delete.
  2. Confirm the deletion.

These records will not take effect until you have updated your nameservers with your domain registrar and those changes have propagated, which can take up to 48 hours.

Change Nameservers with your Registrar: One-time Only

When you are ready to change to using DigitalOcean to manage your DNS records, you’ll need to point to the DigitalOcean name servers from your registrar. This is different for every registrar.

How to Point to DigitalOcean Nameservers From Common Domain Registrars provides instructions for how to do this with many common registrars, including GoDaddy, NameCheap, Network Solutions, and more.

Delete a Domain

  1. Configure new nameservers with your domain registrar.
  2. In the Control Panel, navigate from Networking to the Domains page.
  3. Open the domain’s More menu and select Delete.
  4. Confirm the deletion in the modal that follows.

This deletes the domain and all of its records.
