Floating IP Quickstart

To follow along, you will need a DigitalOcean account. If you don’t already have one, you can register on the sign up page.

Create and Assign Floating IPs

To create a floating IP:

  1. From the control panel, open the Create menu, then click Floating IPs.
  2. In Search for a Droplet, choose the Droplet you want to point the floating IP to, and click Assign Floating IP.

Once you have at least one address assigned, you can reserve additional floating IP addresses in specific datacenters without assigning them to Droplets by following the link in the header text.

Reassign Floating IPs

To reassign a floating IP to a different Droplet:

  1. From the Networking page, click the Floating IPs tab.
  2. Open the More menu of the floating IP you want to reassign and click Reassign.
  3. In Search for a Droplet, choose the new target Droplet.

Unassign Floating IPs

To unassign a floating IP:

  1. From the Networking page, click the Floating IPs tab.
  2. Open the More menu of the floating IP you want to reassign and click Unassign.

Assigned floating IP addresses are free, but unassigned floating IP addresses are not. Learn more about floating IP pricing.
