We’re thrilled to announce the integration of Cilium Hubble into our DigitalOcean Kubernetes (DOKS) service, adding a powerful new tool for advanced observability and security at no additional cost. Cilium Hubble offers Kubernetes admins and developers unparalleled network visibility and security, enabling them to monitor, troubleshoot, and secure their microservices with ease. Hubble helps transform the complexity of Kubernetes into more granular control over your cluster using eBPF to provide deep visibility into the networking and behavior of services and infrastructure.

How Cilium Hubble empowers DigitalOcean Kubernetes users

Cilium Hubble is an open-source project that builds on top of Cilium, the eBPF-based networking, observability, and security solution. Cilium became DigitalOcean Kubernetes’ new data plane in 2019, and with the addition of Hubble, DigitalOcean Kubernetes users will get full visibility into the network traffic and security within a DOKS cluster.

Key features and benefits

  • Advanced network visibility: Hubble enables users to observe and troubleshoot interactions between microservices in a Kubernetes cluster. This includes real-time monitoring of network traffic, service dependencies, and connectivity issues.
  • Security insights: Enhanced security analysis and threat detection, helping you to identify potential security risks within your Kubernetes environment. Monitor network policy with detailed observations on DNS resolutions.
  • Scalable architecture: Built to handle the needs of large-scale, production Kubernetes environments.
  • Monitoring and altering: Hubble precisely identifies network issues and can distinguish between DNS, application, or network problems. Set up real-time alerts for TCP interruptions, DNS, and response rate analytics for TCP SYN requests.
  • User-friendly interface: A simple and intuitive UI for easy navigation and analysis showing a dependency graph between services like highlighting HTTP calls and Kafka interactions

With the integration of Cilium Hubble into DOKS, users can now gain deeper insights into their Kubernetes deployments. Whether you are tracking real-time network flows, visualizing service dependencies, or detecting potential security vulnerabilities, Hubble equips developers and system administrators with the tools they need for efficient Kubernetes management and troubleshooting. For more information about Hubble visit their repository on GitHub.

How to use Cilium Hubble on DOKS

To start using Cilium Hubble on DigitalOcean Kubernetes is easy, the only requirements are having the Cilium and Hubble CLIs and to authenticate with your cluster. After that, you’re ready to access the Hubble UI.

Pricing and availability

Cilium Hubble is now included with DigitalOcean Kubernetes version 1.29.x or greater at absolutely no additional cost. Hubble will be widely available in all data centers with DOKS clusters. At this time metrics tracing is not part of Hubble on DOKS.

The addition of Cilium Hubble to DigitalOcean Kubernetes reaffirms our commitment to robust, secure, and easy-to-use infrastructure. Stay tuned for more updates and enhancements from DigitalOcean. For any questions or feedback, reach out to our support team or visit our community page.
