attaching a droplet to a .tk domain

August 5, 2014 2.5k views

I recently bought a droplet.
In addition to the droplet I registered 2 free domain names (with a .ty suffix) - 1 is a staging domain name and the other is the actual domain name
I'm trying for a over a day to attach these 2 domains to my server (1 for the staging site and 1 for the regular site)
I tried following this: however it seems like the domain names are not attaching to the actual server. If I try to ping the staging domain name or the regular domain via the linux command line I receive: ping: "unknown host" message.
I'll be happy to upload a print screen of my DigitalOcean control panel if needed
This is my first server for Django deployment so i'll appreciate it if you could explain what I'm missing in order to attach the domain names to the server (i'm using nginx if it matters)
Thanks in advance

If you can post the screenshot, then we might have a better idea of the problem you facing. I've personally registered .tk domains in the DigitalOcean control panel. So I know it's possible.

The first thing that jumps out at me is that you're talking about two different domains. Are you trying to set them up together? You need to configure each domain separately. In fact, I now see that you seem to have set up as a subdomain of Your site shows up at:

Hi Andrew
first thanks for your quick response
so what i'm basically trying to do is attach a domain name for the staging site and attach a regular domain name to my droplet like this:

  • - this will be my staging domain name (obviously)
  • - this will be my primary website

I know how to redirect each domain name to the appropriate website on my nginx server (on my droplet) but I dont know how to attach these 2 different domain names to the same droplet
Since I couldnt find any way to directly upload an image I uploaded it here: [](droplet-control-panel)

It's weird that I have this as a subdomain - I actually have no idea how that happened
what I really want to do is be able to view the staging website using and view the actual website using

could you explain or post a link to where I can find out how to do this?

sorry for confused questions but it's the first time i'm actually dealing with these things

  • You can only use one root domain. Delete the A record for in Then set up a new domain for just like you did for For each domain, then create an A record for @ in your.ip.address

You want each domain to look something like:

I've reentered both of the domain (1 for the and 1 for and I verified that both have the @ at the A entry - is this page listing the subdomains of the main domain?
I'm now waiting for the changes to propagate hopefully it will work
how long does it usually take to propagate?

  • I've just realized I keep adding extra answers... I apologize and I'll comment properly the next time

  • No problem. We've got some improvements on the way that should make comments more clear. =)

Unfortunately, it can take some time for DNS to propagate, sometimes up to an hour.

  • Thanks Andrew it worked :)
