I have a program I would like to listen on port 49271, however I cannot get that port open. I have tried this with both Ubuntu and Debian.
I have used iptables and ufw and both say that this port is open upon reboot. However I cannot access this port from a remote connection.
Is there something else blocking the ports like security groups in AWS? I have no problem opening ports on AWS.

I believe you should look this answer here:

http://stackoverflow.com/questions/9609130/quick-way-to-find-if-a-port-is-open-on-linux

also here:
http://www.linux-noob.com/forums/index.php?/topic/1262-check-what-ports-are-open/
In order to connect you’ll need to have a service listening on that port. First check the output of this command to see if the port is listening:

sudo netstat -ntulp
