Email server with Ubuntu 14.04

Posted on June 8, 2016

Hello, yes, I know there’s a lot of solutions out there but, I would like to know if it’s possible to make a secure email server on a Droplet with Ubuntu. Maybe also with openpgp.

Thank you.

Hey there,

A “secure email server” is a bit of a misnomer. Email, by design, is not encrypted or secure. It was designed in a day where no one ever considered that folks would try to do “bad things” on the internet.

Running an email server is no easy task. There is a big reason that there are lots of email service providers out there - running a mail server and keeping it working always is a pain in the butt! We even have a great article about this here: https://www.digitalocean.com/community/tutorials/why-you-may-not-want-to-run-your-own-mail-server

If you STILL want to run your mail server, I would suggest using Mailinabox. We have a great tutorial on how to use this here: https://www.digitalocean.com/community/tutorials/how-to-run-your-own-mail-server-with-mail-in-a-box-on-ubuntu-14-04
