I am trying to add a volume to my application and struggling! I think maybe I need to switch to a professional plan, but I can’t figure out where to do that. Very confused.

Hi there:
App Platform does not actually support volumes at all. Volumes are ment to be used with Droplets.
It’s not an App Platform plan limitation, and there’s no upgrade path that unlocks it. By design, App Platform containers only have ephemeral disk space, and anything stored there is wiped on deploy or restart. DigitalOcean confirms this here:
https://docs.digitalocean.com/products/app-platform/reference/limits/
Under Storage Limits, it states:
App Platform does not support volumes.
If you need persistent storage you have to use something external, like:
DigitalOcean Managed Databases for application data
Spaces Object Storage for files, uploads, static assets
So you weren’t missing a setting. It’s just not a feature App Platform offers.
