How does referral program work?

Posted on September 13, 2014

Hi everyone,

I don’t fully understand how referral program works. “Anyone you refer to DigitalOcean that signs up using your unique referral link will receive $10” - does it mean that this money will be taken from my account? And if so, will it happen just after his registration or payment method confirmation, or will I actually be paid just $15 after he is billed $25? In the first case I would lose money, if I refer people who won’t total 25$ in billings, right?

Thanks!

Hi!

“It’s simple! Anyone you refer to DigitalOcean that signs up using your unique referral link will receive $10 in hosting credit immediately after unlocking their account by adding a valid payment method. In return for helping us spread the word, we’ll give you $25 for each friend that signs up, once they are billed $25 as a DO customer.” source: https://www.digitalocean.com/help/referral-program/

In other words:

  1. You send a referral link to your friend
  2. He signs up and receives 10$ credit from DigitalOcean (like with a promo code, not from your wallet)
  3. (optional) He reaches 25$ in billings => You get 25$
