If a server/droplet exceeds the bandwidth limit, will it be charged ?

As @hansen mentioned, currently we don’t charge for overages as we do not currently provide a way for customers to track their usage or put a cap on it. In extreme cases, such as you having a 1TB limit and you’re pushing 10-20TB (i.e 10-20x your limit), we might get in touch to see what’s going on and request an explanation, though if overages are minor / not causing issues, then you’d be ok.

You can use vnstat to track bandwidth from the CLI. You can also get a very detailed look at pretty much any and all metrics using NetData. It’s simple to install (basically you hit enter a few times and it’s ready to use):

Since there’s currently no way for you to monitor bandwidth via the control panel, over-use will not be charged, but this can change in the future and DigitalOcean will notify about such change. But if your droplet has high usage (either traffic, CPU or disk I/O), then DigitalOcean might contact you to get an explanation. And they might request you either buy higher levels of droplets or take your service elsewhere, if they consider your usage a disruption for others.

Droplets include free outbound data transfer, starting at 1,000 GiB/month for the smallest plan. Excess data transfer is billed at $0.01/GiB. For example, the cost of 1,000 GiB of overage is $10. Inbound bandwidth to Droplets is always free.
