Is the storage on the instances ephemeral?

Posted on July 25, 2014

Hi there,

I’m thinking of getting one server for running a few small websites and I wanted to know if the storage is permanent or not. I.e. if the instance crashes will it retain everything on the disk or will it be lost to the ether? Is running a database on an instance something you can do without worrying too much (e.g. just with daily backups or something)?

Thanks,

No, your droplet’s disk space is reserved to your droplet even when it’s powered off (keep in mind that you will be billed for droplets that aren’t running). You can definitely run a database server on a droplet without worrying about your data being lost :)

Thanks Kamal!
