The DigitalOcean Droplets are not free; they are paid virtual private servers.
Billing is hourly, and you only pay for the resources you use (like CPU, RAM, and storage). For example, if you create a $5/month Droplet, you’ll either pay $0.007/hour or the full $5 if it runs all month.
You can check your usage and costs in your DigitalOcean dashboard. 😊

As mentioned the droplets are not free of charge. However, DigitalOcean is providing $100 of free credits to any educator, student, or researcher who wants to explore DigitalOcean products for higher education purposes.
