This is a very complicated question I’m afraid. The best thing that you can do is check your MTA logs and see what actually occurred. If Google accepted the email, they will have delivered it and you can focus on that side of things. If they didn’t accept it, the logs will explain why.
Email servers are not as simple as they once were, I highly recommend having your application use an SMTP delivery service. The amount of effort required for the amount of return gained is often not profitable for users.
