Ubuntu 16.04.5 LTS apt-get update SSL error to apt.dockerproject.org

Ubuntu 16.04

Today I tried apt-get update since a long time ago.

But I got the following error:

Ign:11 https://apt.dockerproject.org/repo ubuntu-trusty/main Translation-en
Ign:8 https://apt.dockerproject.org/repo ubuntu-trusty/main i386 Packages
Ign:9 https://apt.dockerproject.org/repo ubuntu-trusty/main all Packages

Ign:11 https://apt.dockerproject.org/repo ubuntu-trusty/main Translation-en

Ign:9 https://apt.dockerproject.org/repo ubuntu-trusty/main all Packages

Ign:11 https://apt.dockerproject.org/repo ubuntu-trusty/main Translation-en

E: Failed to fetch https://apt.dockerproject.org/repo/dists/ubuntu-trusty/main/binary-i386/Packages SSL: certificate subject name (**mydomain.com**) does not match target host name 'apt.dockerproject.org'
...
  1. Why is it referencing to apt.dockerproject.org? I don’t have this in /etc/apt/sources.list

  2. Why is the SSL certificate my domain’s name?

I’m using certbot to manage the SSL. Have tried certbot renew and it was skipped because it wasn’t due yet. Meaning it’s still valid.

How do I resolve this?

Here’s the contents for /etc/apt/sources.list:

  • I found the source in /etc/apt/sources.list.d/

    These are the contents:

    certbot-ubuntu-certbot-xenial.list
    docker.list
    docker.list.distUpgrade
    docker.list.save

I dont have docker installed. Is it save to remove docker.list*?

Hi @resting,

Glad to hear you managed to find the issue on your own. As for the follow-up question, you should be able to remove it from the list without any concern.

P.S. I’ll recommend creating a backup of the file just in case :D
