Updating joomla extensions and versions

It’s been a very long time since I did this last and I can’t recall how I did it. When I log into the control panel it shows that I can update the version to 3.7.2 and that there are 6 extension updates available. I wrote in my notes something about making sure not to unzip the zipped file if it is zipped. I’ve already created a backup of everything, I just forget the actual update process and when I search the last piece of information was from 3 years ago…any help would be great! Thanks

  • First thing to do ALWAYS is make a backup (I recommend using Akeeba Backup for this).
Once that is done it is always best practice to first update all of your extensions. Depending on how long you have neglected your site and what version of Joomla you are running the likelihood of an extension working if you update Joomla first could cause issues. You will find that in most all cases extensions are backward compatible, so update them first.

Once the above steps are completed you can go ahead and update Joomla to the latest version. Once done test to make sure all your pages are loading without issue and best practice then dictates to take another backup.

NOTE: Using Akeeba backup is straightforward but depending on your server you may want to test your backup before relying on it. So test first and if it passes you are golden, if not take another backup and if you continue to have issues it is likely you are on a cheap host and your problems are far more complex than this reply is capable of doing for you.

    Best of luck…
