why use ftp when scp and rsync are available?

Posted on July 21, 2013

I’m wondering what advantage, if any, an FTP client would offer to move files between a remote server and a computer when the same can be done with scp and rsync commands. Can you explain?

SCP and rsync authenticate using SSH. SSH is much more secure than FTP (FTP transfers usernames/passwords in plaintext!).

I recommend using SCP/rsync whenever you can and not use FTP at all.
