I have installed apache on localhost to test my python cgi scripts but would like send-only postfix functionality to see if users receive confirmation emails from webmaster@mydomain.com. A google search for this points to you, but the domains I own are on shared web hosting plans with other providers. Can I test smtp with droplets and if so, how?

Unfortunately I’m using shared hosting, not VPS hosting, so when I run dig on mydomain.com, there is no MX server listed. I’m no more interested in testing my scripts in a shared hosting environment than any VPS owner would be, but I can’t see a way around the problem, since I’m not running my own mail server. I was looking for a cloud service to avoid having to install Postfix on my localhost - Postfix/sendmail is a lot more work to set up and maintain than Apache2, since Apache can function in stand-alone mode.
You can create a droplet and install email service on that… After which add MX entry to host the email server on your droplet IP… I guess it cant be done if your host or domain registered has advance DNS control panel…
So
mail.yourdomain.com -> your VPS IP smtp.youromdian.com -> your VPS IP imap.youromdian.com -> your VPS IP
also MX entry to yourdomain.com points to your VPS IP
VPS should be running a proper email server…
I think this can be done in similar way as your can use Google apps or MS Hotmail for your domain programs !!
