do-release-upgrade breaks VPN functionality

Posted on February 19, 2018

Hi,

I installed a private VPN via http://dovpn.carlfriess.com/. The droplet created was running ubuntu 13.X. The VPN running on unbuntu 13.x was working fine but after I did do-release-upgrade the VPN stopped working. I receive the error that L2TP-VPN did not respond. Did I overlook something? And how to fix? Thanks in advance!

@xMudrii version running before do-release-update is 14.04.5 LTS

Doing do-release-update can be risky sometimes, as some packages can get removed if there’s no appropriate version for that Ubuntu.

What Ubuntu version are you running right now?

Check do you still have the appropriate VPN packages installed.

Also, if you’re running Ubuntu 16.04, make sure your VPN service is started. As of 16.04, Ubuntu is using systemd instead of Upstart. Therefore, maybe VPN packages are still there, but VPN service is not started because there’s no appropriate systemd service. In that case, check out the website for that VPN package to find out how you can create one.

@xMudrii I was already thinking it could have been doing something with the VPN service not being started.

When I type systemd I get => Startup finished in 15ms.

The website is using the script on the Github, can’t really find information at first sight!
