I am currently working on pointing a domain name previously associated with Network Solutions toward my digital ocean droplet. But, the CNAME hostname that Network Solutions is giving me is: mail.[my domain name].netsolmail.net and smtp.[my domain name].netsolmail.net. However, with the DO program, the hostname I want (mail.[mydomainname].netsolmail.net) automatically results in (mail.[mydomainname].netsolmail.net.[mydomainname]).

I do not exactly understand your problem, but I want to clarify something:
If your domain is mydomian.com then any DNS record you add will definitely end in mydomain.com you cannot create records which do not end in mydomain.com using your domain registrar I believe you need to contact network solutions and give them the IP addresses of your droplets to be assigned with mail.[my domain name].netsolmail.net and smtp.[my domain name].netsolmail.net as they own this domain netsolmail.net not you, so they can add records to it.
Hope this helps.
