I can't setup email.. Followed tutorial but still not setup properly
I have been powering through the tutorials and setting things up. I’m pretty much a newb, but managed to get the server up and running. I thought I could do the emails by just following the tutorials and doing research as well, but after a couple of days of trying, I am pretty lost.
Running: Ubuntu 14.04 x64
I followed everything, but I didn’t do the signed SSL certificate, as shown here:
So I’m not sure if off the bat that makes the first tutorial void, but that’s where I’m at.
I was sending myself emails and they were coming back undeliverable, but now they don’t anymore, so I think emails are at least getting received (I think).
In fact, I thought I was doing everything right, right up until the last step (before installing spam assassin, which I haven’t) where it says to enter:
telnet mydomain.com 993
I get the following error:
telnet: Unable to connect to remote host: Connection refused
Then I tried to setup the email on mac mail with these details:
- Username: email@example.com
- Password: myemail password
- IMAP: mysite.com
- SMTP: mysite.com
And then I used port 993 for secure IMAP with SSL authentication required, for both outgoing and incoming servers, but nothing happens.
I tried checking my email from the terminal by switching to the user
$ ssh user@ipaddress
and then I installed the program “mail”
apt-get install mailutils
but I get
Cannot open mailbox /var/mail/myusername: Permission denied
No mail for myusername
So to be honest I’m not even sure if this is the right way to check my email trough the terminal, or if it’s even setup properly, but after a couple of days I thought maybe someone could share some of their genius with me to help get my mail at least through mac mail.
NOTE: Once mail is working I will pay the $5 for google apps and try to install the emails so they are accessible there for myself and my company members. Not sure if that’s relevant but thought I should mention it.
