I have 2 droplets, is it possible to point a subdomain to another droplet?

  • If I try to add the subdomain from the other droplet, I have the error message: Domain or a subdomain is already owned by another user.

Hi @Adam0101,

That’s entirely possible! I’ll assume you’ve added the main Domain to your DigitalOcean account. To add the subdomain you’ll just need to go to your Control Panel –> Find your Domain and click on the 3 dots –> Manage Domain. There in order to create a subdomain choose an A record, in the Hostname type in the subdomain.

For example if you want to add a subdomain called ‘test’, you’ll need to :

Choose the DNS record - A
Hostname - test
Will Direct to - choose the Droplet
TTL - leave it as 3600
Create Record.

That should be enough for you to point your subdomain to another Droplet.

  • I got a reply from the support! Great and quick :)

Thank you for reaching out to us! I just tested this, as this not something I’ve seen someone want to do before.

You should be able to log into your account (where is added), go to > networking > and then add an A record for “extrasub” to point to the IP address of the droplet on your account.

The error message you’re reporting pops up when you try to add the same domain name (“”) to two different accounts. That can’t happen, as that would create two conflicting domain names. But you should be able to have “” on one account, and then have some of the A records point to one account and some of the A records pointing to another.

    • I’m glad to hear you got a reply back from the Support with some detailed response.
