My Images Feature: How to use it?

When creating a droplet I see a "my images" tab, but I can't work out how to create or upload images. Is it actually a working feature?

After your create a new server you can install your base architecture there like for instance a full rails stack.

The next time you want to deploy a server with a rails stack instead of starting from scratch just take a snapshot of the first server you created and that snapshot will appear under the "My Images" tab and you can launch a new server with that stack already installed.

That way you can create base systems, snapshot them, and then launch new servers from those snapshots whenever you need a fresh install.
  • While we're waiting for custom images feature, I was wondering about a couple of things with regards to instead use the snapshot method:

    1. Does the snapshot method cost us anything extra?
    2. If I create a VPS for the sole purpose of setting it up and snapshoting it, do I need to keep that VPS in order to keep the snapshot or can I delete the VPS but keep the snapshot?
Fantastic! Thanks for the quick reply :)
Is there a way to download such images?
In what format they are?
Currently we do not support downloading images, however that will be possible in the near future.
  • 2 years after, I can't see any progress… what did you mean exactly by "in the near future" ?
The ability to download snapshots would certainly pop up DA reviews. :)

and how about uploading images, in specified format?
to be able to set up your server in a test environement?
kind regards
Was there an answer to the question posed by jonas? Can we upload disk images?
