Hi - I am new around these part and to linux, but you have to start somewhere.
I am going to be using a developer that I know, but still would rather not give him root on the box if I do not have to, can someone direct me to how I should be setting up access for contractors on an ubuntu box. I understand access control, from the windows side just not real familiar with linux yet.
Thanks

One way would be to give him limited SFTP access.

Create the developer an account.
Limit it to a specific folder.
Get him to upload the deployment.
