Hey there everyone! I’ve started my VPN with ubuntu. I’m using it on my asus rt n66u client. I’m just wondering whether it’s possible to block any ad via vpn with editing hosts or something else (btw i tried editing hosts and it didn’t help, proly i’ve mistaken)?

VPN services do not offer DNS resolution generally (OpenVPN for example, does not do this) and so your modifications to the droplets /etc/hosts will have no affect. You will want to make these modification locally if you need them as the VPN service generally does not offer this sort of modification.
