I checked out the first suggestions already and it keeps throwing an error when I run “sudo /etc/init.d/postfix reload”

This is the error
* Reloading Postfix configuration…
postfix/postfix-script: fatal: the Postfix mail system is not running [fail]

I am using 12.10 because it was DO one click set up for a Ruby app.

Ubuntu has stopped working on bugs for that release, you know. If yours is a production server, there’s no reason to not go with 12.04.3 LTS (Long Term Support). If you want the latest (which is not always the greatest), check out 13.10.
