Question about DNS and how hosting works

Posted on January 15, 2016

This is all new to me and I want to see if I understand it all. So, you register the Domain with a server. My domain is registered with my DO droplet, but is also registered with my register site by default, which is why they can host my site for free. If they can do that, how does my DO fit into the equation if the registrar does both host and link domains?

Hey there welcome to the community.

DNS on DO works the same as any other DNS provider, so long as you point your domain to the DO name servers, you can then insert all your A records, CNAME records and whatnot into DO, so if you’re hosting a website here you can just add the records directly in.

It really doesn’t matter what DNS provider you have, but DO has all the records anyone would ever need anyways. It all comes down to personal preference in the end.
