with the global redundancy of DO, does it make ANY sense to operate my own DNS servers from a security/failover point of view?

No. DO's DNS setup or another third party like CloudFlare would be better.
You're better off not having all your eggs in one basket.
Yes. No. Good start............ :-)
But hosting your own allows for DNS failover if for example one of your web servers goes down, it just changes the DNS record to point to another.
It's probably best to go with a well known provider that has failover support such as Dyn, that way you'll get reliability on both fronts.
some more detail: I have all my droplets with DO, so a separate DNS server on DO's network doesn't make sense, right?
