Hello all.

My first post here.

My primary domain is set up in Dreamhost with a working website there.
Is it possible for me to just host a subdomain in Digital Ocean?

Hi @botbuilderstech,

Yes, it’s entirely possible and up to you. All you need to do is, create a subdomain and point it to your Droplet with DigitalOcean and that’s it. Now you can create a website for your subdomain without a problem.

  • on checking with Dreamhost, looks like I can’t point a subdomain that i create within Dreamhost to an IP address.

So, this means, I will have to move the files of my main host to Digital Ocean itself.

    • Hi @botbuilderstech,

This is really weird, you should be able to! This is like a normal out of the box service that should be included.

Before going through all the work of migrating your files and websites and so on, I’ll urge you to check with their support. There should be away to go about it!

      • Thanks for the reply @KFSys
unfortunately, as per Dreamhost support, a subdomain cannot be redirected to an external IP (outside of Dreamhost servers). A domain can be redirected, but not a sub-domain.

        • Hi @botbuilderstech,

          That is very weird.

In that case, what you can do is to add your Domain to DigitalOcean and manage it’s DNS here. From here you can manage the DNS however you like. You can point your domain to another IP address, your sub-domain to an IP address/server that’s with Dreamhost or another company and so on.
