starting pgadmin3, installing gtk?

I have pgadmin3 installed on my ubuntu server following the instructions I got here https://help.ubuntu.com/community/PostgreSQL. I know that DO also has instructions but that's only for PHPpgadmin on apache https://www.digitalocean.com/community/articles/how-to-install-phppgadmin-on-a-virtual-server-running-ubuntu-12-04 Anways, the ubuntu instructions that I linked to say to start pgadmin3 by typing that command in the terminal, but when I do I get this error Error: Unable to initialize gtk, is DISPLAY set properly? when I do echo $DISPLAY it returns nothing. I'm wondered if I have gtk installed but I didn't know how to check, and when I googled around, I found a lot of different (very old)instructions for installing gtk, some involving python, which I'm not using on my server (i have ruby installed) therefore I'm nervous about running random commands I find on the net

pgadmin3 is a graphical client for managing your postgresql databases.
Assuming you want something like phpmyadmin, I suggest setting up phpPgAdmin (http://phppgadmin.sourceforge.net/doku.php).

Installation instructions can be found here: https://raw.github.com/phppgadmin/phppgadmin/master/INSTALL
Why do you assume I want something like phpmyadmin? I don't have php installed on my server (and don't plan to) so I thought I had to use pgadmin3, which I also have on my local machine

Your server doesn't have a desktop environment/window manager by default so I assumed you're looking for a non-graphical postgres administration tool.

If you want a graphical client, I recommend installing a lightweight desktop environment such as LXDE (install the lubuntu-desktop package)
