Question

The server requested authentication method unknown to the client [caching_sha2_password]

When I run PHP’s mysqli_connect() to connect to a newly created MySQL 8 database cluster I get the following error:

PHP Warning: mysqli_connect(): The server requested authentication method unknown to the client [caching_sha2_password] in /path/to/test.php on line 2
PHP Warning: mysqli_connect(): (HY000/2054): The server requested authentication method unknown to the client in /path/to/test.php on line 2

The password encryption I’m using for this user is “Legacy – MySQL 5.x” but that’s not helping.

In https://stackoverflow.com/q/50026939/569976 the poster mentions modifying the “MySQL Server ini file” but as this is a managed DB instance I can’t modify the ini file (not that it’s clear if that’d even help anyway)

Hi there,

I could suggest following the steps from this answer here:

https://www.digitalocean.com/community/questions/how-to-change-caching_sha2_password-to-mysql_native_password-on-a-digitalocean-s-managed-mysql-database

Also, try to upgrade PHP to 7.2 or newer as well.

Let me know how it goes!

Best,

Bobby
