Question

Transfer multiple Wordpress + domains

 • Posted August 3, 2013

Hi I’m considering moving my whole server from Bluehost to DO. I just get too much downtime and their speeds don’t reflects their claims!!

Obviously I have multiple domains and each hosting a Wordpress site + emails.

What package would you recommend for 6-7 light traffic wordpress blogs. I’d require the ability to create FTP accounts for each domain.

I’m not too savvy with Terminal but I’m more than willing to learn as I’ve done a a bit of playing around with it.

If you could point me in the right directions to tutorials as to which would be the best server to use and things like phpMyadmin and all the other bits I will require.

I am now looking to do the same For those looking into an easier start up … try serverpilot it is the easiest way for non- terminal users to get going

I agree with Stewart. Start with the server setup first. I’d also recommend the $5 droplet. Move one blog at a time. You’ll have to install everything from the OS to the webserver, setup DNS, configure firewall and more. I don’t mean to scare you, but if you don’t do it right, you’ll be an easy target for someone who’s trying to hack you.
I did the move from shared hosting to VPS about 7 years ago. It’s a strep learning curve to set up a server securely so I would recommend creating a $5 droplet first and see how you find setting it up. If you have no problems you can then scale it up. Means you can try it out with no commitment.

Good luck.

Hi thanks a lot for that’s great, and would you say it would be a good idea to just follow tutorials on setting up FTP?

As I’m sure you can tell I’m new to controlling my own VPS but for the price I thought it would be a great idea to try out and see if it could meet my needs and learn along the way.

If anyone has other experiences of doing something like this then please let us know.
Thanks

If your sites serve mostly static content, the $10 plan would prob. suffice (w/caching). If your sites generate a lot of database queries, go w/a multi-core server, e.g. the $20 plan.

With D.O., you can scale (up) rather easily; so it’s not as though you’ll be trapped if you shoot too low at the onset.

Then, check out How to Migrate WordPress from Shared Hosting to a Cloud Server with Zero Downtime.
