I have an mysql container (incl. adminer) running on a droplet, I can access the container from my local pc or anywhere on the net using the public ip inside my dotnetcore api container however when i run same container inside the same droplet i get unable to connect to host error.

Hi there,
What I usually do is to create a Docker network and attached the containers to the same network. Then you could use the name of the MySQL container for your connection string.
Here is how you could do that:
This is a good practice as your database connections would not have to go through the public Droplet IP but would be routed internally via the Docker network.
