Backup & Snapshot process

Posted on January 20, 2013

I was reading that we can sched backups or snapshots daily, weekly. Question, either of this process will make the VPS offline meanwhile? Another question, if I need a file or anything that I deleted from the actual active server/vps, am I able to retrieve that particular file from the backup image or I have to restore a new vps with the backup made before the file was deleted?

I’ve also got questions about the backup process, the documentation is thin as to how to schedule snapshots/backups, etc. Thanks!

Right now you only have the option to turn on or off backups. They run based on some algorithm designed by Digital Ocean. Also depending on the size of the droplet the backups force the server to go off line while it is running.

I’ve heard that they are looking into giving the user more control of when and how often the backups occur.

In order to restore a deleted file you would have to spin up a new server with the backup and copy the file. Since you are charged by the hour, even a very large server would only cost cents to restore if you distroy it right after you are done.

Search the website for more information. I use google to search. Type in the following in the search box:
site:digitalocean.com backup
