Best distro for PHP 5.6 / Wordpress

Posted on October 9, 2015

Hi there, I need to install latest Wordpress (4.3.1 as of now) but it requires PHP 5.6

My question is, which distro is best suited for this. Unfortunately , both Ubuntu 14.04 LTS and CentOS 7.1 don’t have the latest PHP. I’m worried about installing Ubuntu 15.04 since its not LTS.

So, which distro to use for PHP 5.6 , CentOS 7.1 or Ubuntu 14.04 LTS to upgrade stock PHP to 5.6? I guess what I’m trying to say is , which distro is easier to upgrade stock PHP to latest?

Cheers Abdul

Hey Abdul,

As you’ve found, the best distro is the one you are most comfortable with. If you feel comfortable and knowledgeable on how the distro functions and the applicable security settings are configured, that makes for a happy an effective sysadmin.

With that said, for those who prefer CentOS and do not want the overhead or licensing costs of cPanel, I recently tried out Centmin Mod. It installs a LEMP stack on a CentOS server. It allows you to easily swap out nginx, php, and mysql versions. It also has integrations for various caching modules. Recently it has integrated letsencrypt and http2 support.

Happy coding,
