Hello,
we would like to manage our first VPS/droplet. We migrated through 3 different shared hosts, but they can’t scale with our pagesize and load. What we know yet is how to deal with ftp, admin panels, DNS-Servers and stuff, but we are new to linux.
We found some admin panels (plesk, cpanel, spanel, etc.), which advertised to make the management easy automatable, fast and secure.
- Is it almost as easy to manage the server with those tools as a managed server, or is it still very time consuming?
- Which one could you recommend to do that?

I can confirm it’s easier to manage your droplets with Panels like Plesk and cPanel! You’ll need to be able to use SSH and do some stuff from there as well however the panels provide excellent integration with everything from FTP services to MySQL and even mails.
In my experience, I’ve been mostly using cPanel however I’ve come across Plesk, CentOS WebPanel and VestaCP. I firmly belive cPanel to be the best one with the easiest panel to understand. Having said that, if you have more than 3 websites, it’s a paid panel.
If you are looking for a free panel, I’ll recommend using CentOS WebPanel. Have in mind that the latter needs more SSH knowledge although not as much as managing everything from the console.

There a lot of web panels available (most of them are free to use) that you can choose in order to manage your server. What I can recommend is to try them as in this way you can see if it really suits your needs.
I will list the top control panels that I recommend:
CentOS Web Panel Vesta CP Webmin Ajenti ISPConfig
and of course I need to mention Plesk although it’s not free it’s been available for a while and it’s always been the main cPanel competitor. It has a lot of build-in features and a lot of plugins that you can install and you can always reach to their support team if needed which is something that might come handy in time.
You’ve now got some great options if you want to use a control panel with your server but you don’t want to pay for a license. I’ve tried to lay out most of the available options, but which one is best will ultimately depend on your individual needs.
