Question

VirtualMin on a VPS

Virtualmin states it can run on the following servers:

Red Hat Enterprise Linux and derivatives
  - RHEL 8 and 9 on x86_64
  - Alma and Rocky 8 and 9 on x86_64
  - CentOS 7 on x86_64

Debian Linux and derivatives
  - Debian 10, 11 and 12 on i386 and amd64
  - Ubuntu 20.04 LTS and 22.04 LTS on i386 and amd64

I tried setting up Virtualmin here on DigitalOcean and it consistently fails with errors. I’ve tried those very same servers with other hosts on a VPS without any issues. Any recommendations on how to install virtualmin here on DigitalOcean?

Hi there,

What are the exact errors that you are seeing?

I’ve just tested this on a 2GB RAM Ubuntu 20.04 Droplet and 1GB swap file and it worked as expected.

After creating the Droplet, I added an A record for a test domain to point to the Droplet’s IP address as I could then use that domain as the hostname for the Virtualmin installation.

Next, I used the following instructions to do the installation:

https://www.virtualmin.com/download/

Download the installation script:

wget https://software.virtualmin.com/gpl/scripts/virtualmin-install.sh

And then run it:

sudo sh virtualmin-install.sh

After that just follow the installation flow.

What OS were you using with the other hosting provider that the installation was successful for?

Best,

Bobby
