Digital Ocean Droplet back-up and snapshots - location

Backups

Hi,

I have a droplet that is back-up weekly and also has several snapshots. The droplets are in the NYC location only. Are the back-ups and snapshots available even if the NYC Region were to go down for any reason ?

Are they physically stored elsewhere ?

Hi @redsmeg68,

By default, a Droplet snapshot is only available in the region where it was created. If you want to use a snapshot to create Droplets in other regions, you need to add the snapshot to those regions first. It doesn’t cost more to add a snapshot to more regions.

To add a Droplet snapshot to another region, click the source Droplet’s name. On the Droplet’s detail page, click Snapshots in the left menu. Open the snapshot’s More menu and click Add to region to open the Snapshot availability window.

As for Backups, they are available for all Droplets across all regions.

    OK, so if there was a general problem with the NY region and we had to get our droplet up and running in another region we could restore it from a back-up to another region even if the original droplet was un available due to a region wide problem on Digital Ocean ?

      You would be able to restore the backup in another droplet that’s outside of the NY regions given that the Ny region is experiencing issues.
