I’m transferring a domain from GoDaddy nameservers. They setup automatically a cname called “_domainconnect” with a value of “_domainconnect.gd.domaincontrol.com.”.
Do I need such a thing within Digital Ocean?

If you want to manage your DNS within your DigitalOcean account, all you need to do is change the nameservers to ours
You can then add the DNS records that you need (A, MX, SPF and etc). The record you mentioned should be entirely related to a specific service with the other provider.

Yes mentioned you can configure your DNS without it as it’s not something mandatory at all.
Summary. Domain Connect is an open standard that makes it easy for a user to configure DNS for a domain running at a DNS provider to work with a Service running at an independent Service Provider. The user can do so without understanding any of the complexities of DNS.
