I’m looking at deploying a new Ubuntu 16.04 LTS droplet, but before I do that, I’d really like to know if it is going to be a ZFS-based root. I’d prefer the answer to be yes and/or select-able at install. Thanks!

No, it uses ext4 (checked using lsblk -f on my Ubuntu 16.04.1 droplet) And no, I don’t think it’s selectable at install
“…note that ZFS is only supported for data storage, not the root filesystem.” via: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/Reference/ZFS
I guess you could have an ext4 root disk for you OS and use DO’s storage product as a zfs pool. Although I’m not sure if that would make much sense since block storage is probably already highly redundant etc.
Actually it seems this is entirely possible and makes sense: https://twitter.com/benr/status/768852044186685440
