Domian name refused to connect

I bought a domain from google domains and have pointed it to the digital oceans name servers but whenever I go to the domain name it comes back with “ refused to connect”.

I checked on and the domain seems to be ok there, my website works when I go to the ip address but not the domain address.

  • An update. I still can’t get on to my website in most cases but on another computer I am able to get on my website using safari. It is an unsecure connection using http not https. I have since tried to add and update the ssl certificate on digital ocean but it still isnt fixed.

Hi @jdhall,

It sounds like to me like you didn’t have a proper virtual configuration created about your domain -

As for the https related problem, it would mean you don’t have an SSL certificate and it does seem like the configuration file for SSL was not configured.

As I don’t see you posting if you are using either Apache or Nginx, I’ll provide you with both articles :

Both tutorials use Let’s Encrypt which is free to work with and I’ll recommend going through the tutorial which is relevant to your WebService.

In this tutorial, we will show you how to use Let's Encrypt to obtain a free SSL certificate and use it with Nginx on Ubuntu 18.04. We will also show you how to automatically renew your SSL certificate. If you're running a different web server, simply follow your web server's documentation to learn how to use the certificate with your setup.
