Droplets backups storage location

Posted on March 16, 2021

Hi, after the recent OVH events, I’d like to know where Digital Ocean stores the droplets backups. Are they in a different datacenter? Thank you in advance.

Hello @ceo287837

Full disclosure I am the founder of a backup company that specialises in DigitalOcean Backups.

DigitalOcean weekly backups are not stored in another region, you can see this if you want to restore a backup to a droplet in a second region.

With snapshots, the story is the same, however, when they are finished you are free to transfer them to a second region. https://i.imgur.com/xEqIKjy.png

The plug: At SnapShooter we enable customers to have a copy of there snapshots moved to a second region once the backup completes. Learn More about DigitalOcean Cross-region snapshots

TLDR: No DigitalOcean does not offer this automatically unless you tell them to.
