So, I’ve got Mattermost instance which works perfectly fine. Trying to set up Postfix as a send only SMTP server to handle emails (following this tutorial - https://www.digitalocean.com/community/tutorials/how-to-install-and-configure-postfix-as-a-send-only-smtp-server-on-ubuntu-18-04). When I get to Step 3 - Testing the SMTP Server, things grind to a halt. For the sake of the test, I’m sending to my personal gmail account. The email bounces back with this error:
“ethan.watrall@gmail.com: host gmail-smtp-in.l.google.com[173.194.66.27] said: 550-5.7.1 [143.198.117.160 18] Our system has detected that this message is 550-5.7.1 likely suspicious due to the very low reputation of the sending IP 550-5.7.1 address. To best protect our users from spam, the message has been 550-5.7.1 blocked. Please visit 550 5.7.1 https://support.google.com/mail/answer/188131 for more information. 6si5271541qvs.171 - gsmtp (in reply to end of DATA command)”
I’ve tried sending to a couple other emails - one being my university email and one being an outlook email. I don’t even get the bounce message, the email just totally disappears.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. I’m about at the end of myrope with this.

Hi,

is the IP is blocked.
spamhaus.org shows the same. It usually happens when someone reports spam incoming from a particular IP address. It might happen that your droplet inherited an IP address that has already been black-listed (blocked). If you are sure that your droplet is not sending spam, you can fix this issue by filling in the form on proofpoint.com and submitting it.
Hello, @watrall
As per Yannek’s comment, the IP address is currently blacklisted. I can see that SORBS is one of the lists:
http://www.sorbs.net/lookup.shtml?143.198.117.160
A lot of RBLs will check against SORBS and if the IP is listed there they will add the IP address in their database as well. You can make sure that all your email recipients are OPTED-IN and then request removal from SORBS.
Regards, Alex
